Siding

Siding installation by a roofing crew

Siding fails where it meets the roof, the windows and the gutters. Roof Masters installs siding as part of its exterior services, so the wall and the roofline are flashed by the same crew out of Yorktown.

Where siding fails on Hampton Roads houses

Water rarely beats the siding face. It gets behind it. In a humid coastal climate, moisture trapped behind cladding rots sheathing and framing slowly, and the first sign is often a soft spot under a window or a stain below a roofline. Wind-driven rain from storms pushes water into every unsealed joint.

The usual weak points are the same on most houses: the head and sill of each window, the corners, the spot where a roof meets a wall, and the lower courses that sit near splash-back from gutters. A downspout that dumps against the wall or a gutter clogged with pine needles will soak one section of siding until it fails.

Siding damage also tends to show up with roof damage. A fallen branch or a stripped roof edge during a nor'easter can crack panels and tear trim at the same time, which is why storm repair on this site includes gutter and siding repair.

Housewrap, flashing and vinyl, installed in the right order

A good siding job is mostly invisible layers. Housewrap goes on first, lapped shingle-style from the bottom up so water running down the wall always lands on the outside of the layer below. Seams are taped, and the wrap is cut and folded around windows and doors so nothing is left to channel water inward.

Flashing comes next. Windows and doors get head flashing and a sealed sill. Where a roof meets a side wall, step flashing laps behind the housewrap and under the siding, and a kick-out flashing at the bottom of that run throws roof runoff into the gutter instead of down behind the wall. That one small piece of metal prevents a surprising share of hidden rot.

Vinyl siding suits a humid coastal climate when it is installed with room to move. Panels hang rather than being nailed tight, because vinyl expands and contracts with heat. Fasteners go in the center of the nailing slots so the siding can shift without buckling in July or cracking in January.

Roofline, gutters and keeping it all working together

Because Roof Masters is a roofing contractor first, siding gets planned alongside the roof. When a roof is being replaced, the wall flashing, drip edge and gutters can be coordinated so the pieces overlap correctly instead of being fixed by separate trades. Ask for a same-week estimate at (757) 219-2106 and the crew can look at both at once.

Gutters and siding are connected jobs. New gutters and downspouts carry roof water away from the wall, and clean gutters protect the lower courses of siding. Roof Masters handles gutter installation, replacement, downspouts and gutter guards, so a siding job does not leave a gutter problem behind to damage it again.

After the job, the same advice applies as for the roof: look at the walls once a year and after any major storm. Check caulk at windows, loose trim and panels that have shifted. A manufacturer's warranty covers the materials, and the workmanship warranty from Roof Masters covers the installation.
